Prof. Myo Thant
Prof. Myo Thant is a leading seismologist and Professor of Earth Sciences at the Myanmar Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences (MIEPS) specializing in earthquake engineering, Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA), and urban microzonation. Backed by collaborative advanced training at Kyoto University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, his active research explores subsurface S-wave velocity profiling, tectonic landform analysis, and real-time seismic events, including investigations into the active Sagaing Fault zone. Over his prolific career, he has authored and co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers, high-level technical assessment reports, and conference proceedings. His highest-impact contributions feature groundbreaking tectonic research published in premier international journals, notably co-authoring structural evidence of Indian continental subduction and pioneering fault mechanics studies published in Nature Communications (including studies on the major 2025 Mandalay earthquake sequence), alongside peer-reviewed field studies on surface ruptures in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. His definitive seismic assessment reports for Yangon and Mandalay serve as core foundational blueprints for urban risk reduction frameworks across Myanmar.
